Altibox Carrier has confirmed that the contract for its Verena subsea cable system is now in force, marking the formal start of delivery for a high-capacity link between the UK and Denmark.

The system will span approximately 630km across the North Sea, connecting Scarborough on England’s east coast with Esbjerg in Denmark. Designed with 16 fibre pairs, Verena will deliver a total capacity of 512 Tbps, significantly enhancing digital resilience and route diversity between the UK and the Nordics. The cable is scheduled to be ready for service in the fourth quarter of 2028.

Verena is positioned to support growing demand for international connectivity into the Nordic region, particularly as traffic volumes increase across cloud services, data centres and enterprise networks. The route will provide an additional high-capacity path between Northern Europe’s key digital hubs, strengthening redundancy and reducing reliance on existing infrastructure corridors.

Svein Arild Ims, CEO of Altibox Carrier, said the project reflects a new phase of growth in Nordic connectivity. He noted that Verena will play a central role in meeting demand by delivering a resilient, high-capacity link between Denmark and the UK, developed in collaboration with industry partners.

The project brings together a group of subsea and engineering specialists. Geir Holmer, CEO of JTD Associates, said the programme has carried strong momentum into 2026, with early milestones progressing in line with expectations and close coordination across build partners.

Keith Henderson, CEO of Xtera, highlighted the company’s role in providing subsea engineering expertise, with a focus on delivering a robust and reliable platform for next-generation infrastructure.

Jo Braadlie, managing director at Cecon Contracting, said the company will lead marine installation and protection works using its vessel Cecon Vigor, supporting the long-term security of the system.

Peter Fisk, managing director of Pelagian, added that initial engineering and route studies have been completed, with survey operations set to begin in the coming months.

Once complete, Verena is expected to play a key role in strengthening connectivity between the UK and Nordic markets.
