Amazon closes in on Globalstar deal to scale satellite connectivity ambitions

Amazon is nearing a deal to acquire Globalstar, according to reports from Bloomberg News, in a move that could significantly expand its position in the satellite connectivity market.

The potential transaction, which remains under negotiation, is expected to give Amazon access to Globalstar’s existing satellite constellation and licensed spectrum assets. While details have not been officially confirmed, earlier reporting has suggested a valuation in the region of $9–10 billion, which would make it one of Amazon’s largest acquisitions to date.

Strategically, the deal aligns with Amazon’s broader ambitions in low Earth orbit (LEO) connectivity through its Project Kuiper programme. By acquiring an operational satellite network, Amazon could accelerate deployment timelines and enhance service capabilities, rather than relying solely on new satellite launches.

Globalstar’s infrastructure is already used to support direct-to-device connectivity services, including satellite-enabled features on smartphones. The company also holds valuable spectrum rights, which are increasingly seen as a critical asset in the development of next-generation satellite and hybrid terrestrial networks.

However, the transaction may involve additional complexity due to Globalstar’s existing commercial relationships. Apple is a key partner and shareholder, using Globalstar’s network to support emergency messaging services on iPhones. Any acquisition would likely require alignment with these arrangements.

If completed, the deal would intensify competition in the satellite broadband market, where Amazon is positioning itself against established players such as SpaceX and its Starlink network.

The move also reflects a broader trend of hyperscale technology companies investing directly in communications infrastructure to support cloud services, enterprise connectivity and emerging use cases such as direct-to-device communications.

At this stage, both Amazon and Globalstar have not publicly confirmed the deal, and timelines remain subject to change.
