AMD powers 41% of new Top500 systems and more than half of Green500’s top 50

AMD has extended its footprint across the world's leading supercomputing benchmarks, powering 191 systems in the June 2026 Top500 list, up 11% year on year.

The company claims more than half of the top 50 positions in the Green500, the efficiency-focused counterpart, as ISC High Performance opens in Hamburg this week.

Of the 44 new systems added to the Top500 this cycle, AMD powers 18, more than any other silicon vendor, accounting for 41% of new entrants. AMD-equipped systems hold three spots in the top 10, including El Capitan and Frontier, the two most powerful publicly ranked supercomputers in the world, alongside HPC7 at Italian energy firm ENI. AMD Instinct GPUs account for 42% of the total FLOPs delivered by the top 10 systems.

On efficiency, AMD powers 56% of the top 50 Green500 systems, a metric that is gaining strategic weight as data centre operators and national computing programmes face mounting pressure on energy budgets and sustainability targets.

The UK features prominently in this cycle’s results. Two systems at the University of Cambridge, ranked 67 and 68 on the Top500, are the first to be powered by AMD’s Instinct MI355X GPUs. The systems form part of the Zenith AI supercomputer, officially launched earlier this month with DSIT minister James Frith and AMD CEO Lisa Su in attendance, and described by Cambridge as the UK’s largest AI-for-science platform.

Zenith, designed and operated by Cambridge in partnership with AMD and Dell Technologies and funded by DSIT and UKRI, is intended to support research across health, energy and the environment. AMD also highlighted growth in European sovereign AI infrastructure through the ENI HPC7 system.

Looking further ahead, AMD used the ISC period to highlight the Instinct MI430X, its next-generation GPU designed to deliver more than 200 teraflops of native FP64 performance, which AMD projects at more than six times the FP64 output of Nvidia’s forthcoming Rubin architecture. The MI430X is set to power the Discovery system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Alice Recoque exascale system in France, both expected to come online later this decade.
