Dario Amodei, CEO of AI research firm Anthropic, has delivered a stark warning: humanity stands on the brink of an era defined by unprecedented technological risk. One that could determine the very survival of civilisation. In his sweeping 38-page essay, “The Adolescence of Technology: Confronting and Overcoming the Risks of Powerful AI”, Amodei argues that the rapid progress of artificial intelligence is outpacing society’s ability to manage it, and the clock is ticking.

A rite of passage

Amodei frames the current moment as a turbulent transition, a global “adolescence” in which humanity is gifted extraordinary computational and creative power but may lack the maturity to wield it responsibly.

“I believe we are entering a rite of passage, both turbulent and inevitable, which will test who we are as a species,” he writes.

The pace of AI development, Amodei warns, is nothing short of astonishing. Within mere years, he predicts machines could outstrip human intellect across virtually all domains, forming what he dubs a “country of geniuses in a datacentre.”

These AI systems would be capable of designing, executing, and even autonomously initiating projects, from writing and coding to advanced scientific experimentation, and more ominously, the creation of biological agents and weapons. The prospect of AI surpassing human capability is not a distant science fiction scenario, but an imminent reality.

Predicts widescale job losses

One of the most immediate risks is mass job displacement. Amodei forecasts that up to half of all entry-level white-collar positions could be upended within five years. But, as he points out, this challenge pales in comparison to the broader strategic threats on the horizon.

Amodei paints a chilling picture of a world where a “nation-state-level” population of AI entities, tens of millions strong, could easily eclipse even the brightest human minds. The implications for global security and governance are staggering, potentially constituting the gravest national security challenge in a century. The need for international oversight and coordination, he asserts, has never been more urgent.

A tool for terrorism?

The Anthropic CEO does not shy away from the darker possibilities. He warns of AI’s potential as a tool for terrorism, especially in the realm of biological threats where precision targeting and high lethality could spell disaster. While he stops short of predicting immediate catastrophe, Amodei cautions that the cumulative risk over the coming years is significant, with the potential for millions of casualties.

Amodei singles out regimes such as China, where high-tech surveillance and AI-driven social control threaten democracy and personal freedoms worldwide. “AI-enabled authoritarianism terrifies me,” he admits.

Crucially, Amodei also scrutinises the role of AI companies themselves. With trillions of pounds at stake, firms that control advanced AI systems possess unprecedented influence – able to shape public opinion, influence behaviour, and manipulate societies. The challenge, he notes, lies in imposing effective restraints and ensuring accountability in a landscape dominated by immense financial incentives.

A call for action

Amodei calls upon governments, corporations, and the public to recognise the seriousness of the risks and to act decisively. Wealthy individuals, particularly in the tech sector, have a moral obligation to contribute resources and influence, he argues, rejecting the notion that philanthropy is futile in the face of such challenges.

Central to Amodei’s essay is the insistence that this is a global challenge – no single nation or company can tackle the risks of advanced AI alone. International collaboration is vital to prevent arms races, ensure equitable access, and uphold safety standards.

“Humanity needs to wake up,” he urges. “The years in front of us will be impossibly hard, asking more of us than we think we can give.”

Who is Dario Amodei?

Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic and creator of Claude AI has a background in mathematics and computer science. His career took him from Baidu to Google Brain, where he played a pivotal role in advancing deep learning research. His work focused on building neural networks capable of sophisticated cognitive tasks. Ten years ago Amodei joined OpenAI, laying the groundwork for the creation of Claude AI, Anthropic’s flagship project.

Amodei, alongside his sister Daniela and other former OpenAI employees, founded Anthropic in 2021. Under Amodei’s leadership, Anthropic has gained recognition for pioneering responsible approaches to AI, harmonising technical innovation with human values.

Anthropic has quickly risen to challenge tech behemoths like Google and Meta. The company has raised over $1 billion from investors including Google and Salesforce.
