Anthropic CEO and co-founder Dario Amodei is expected to visit India this week to meet with the country’s public officials and enterprise partners, as it hopes to deepen its commitment to the region.
The company plans to open its second Asia-Pacific office in Bengaluru in early 2026, after Tokyo. It comes as it witnesses increasing international demand for Claude, its family of large language model (LLM) chatbots.
“India is compelling because of the scale of its technical talent and the commitment from the Indian government to ensure the benefits of artificial intelligence reach all areas of society, not just concentrated pockets,” said Amodei. “There is deep alignment between the challenges India is tackling and our mission as a company, from deploying AI across diverse languages and contexts, to building frameworks for responsible governance.”
Anthropic views India’s AI ecosystem as playing a critical role in how AI continues to develop worldwide. Already, the country is undergoing a significant technology boom, on account of its young skilled talent pool, government digital initiatives and rapidly expanding infrastructure services.
Amodei added: “Democratically, and we’re looking forward to working with organisations in India to pave a path for how beneficial AI can be scaled in a way that serves everyone.”
Focusing primarily on deploying AI for social impact in education, healthcare and agriculture, Anthropic will be supporting key industries through strategic partnerships with Indian enterprises, businesses and startups. The new Bengaluru office in particular hopes to support India’s entrepreneurial ecosystem as the country continues to digitally transform.
According to the company’s Economic Index Report, India ranks second for its consumer usage of Claude – second only to the US. It found a significant amount of Claude use was for technical and programming-related tasks, with Anthropic believing that the chatbot now has the potential to dramatically accelerate growth among India’s export-focused IT services industry.
“Our expansion comes at a pivotal moment when Indian enterprises and startups are seeking AI models they can trust,” said Paul Smith, Anthropic’s chief commercial officer. “They need systems that combine frontier performance with the safety and reliability required to support critical business operations at the massive scale that they operate.
“We see remarkable promise in India’s innovation ecosystem – the vibrant startup and developer communities alongside Indian enterprises are building solutions that impact millions of lives globally.”
