Bayobab Zambia, a MTN Digital Infrastructure brand and Vodacom Moçambique have launched a fibre interconnection at the Zambia-Mozambique border.

As a result, the partnership will create a cross-border fibre route linking inland networks to subsea cable systems on Africa’s east and west coasts.

Additionally, it will also provide direct access to the 2Africa submarine cable, strengthen network resilience and help expand digital access across Southern Africa.

According to the company, the move will also help improve regional integration, support trade and economic partnership and promote digital inclusion by bringing broadband to underserved communities.

Bayobab Zambia managing director, Lillian Mutwalo, said: “This interconnection is a game-changer for Zambia and the region. By creating a seamless link to the 2Africa cable system, we are positioning Zambia as a regional hub for connectivity and enabling businesses and communities to thrive in the digital economy.”

Vodacom Mozambique managing director, Simon Karikari, added: “This partnership strengthens Mozambique’s digital backbone and expands the capacity required to support growing demand for reliable connectivity.

“By enhancing cross-border resilience, we are accelerating access to high-quality digital services that drive economic growth and support the Government‘s Internet for All ambition by 2030.”

The move is part of MTN Group’s Ambition 2030 vision and, separately, Vodacom’s goal to connect 260 million customers across Africa by 2030.
