Black & White Engineering has expanded its European footprint into Spain for the first time, as it seeks to further grow across the data centre sector.

The new office is based in Madrid and the company said it would strengthen its presence in the country and support rising demand from its data centre clients across Europe. It will also bring structural, MEP and design management expertise closer to clients in the region, the consultancy added.

Led by the company’s area director for Spain, Hector Hernandez, and regional director for Europe, Marcos Uttley, the new office aims to lead Black & White Engineering’s growth across Southern Europe.

Uttley has significant senior leadership experience across engineering, real estate development, design consultancy and infrastructure services. He has previously held CEO, managing director and COO roles across Spain, Portugal, Italy, the UK, Germany and the US. Throughout his career, he has worked to strengthen client relationships and support growth across Europe.

“Spain is an important market for data centre investment and gives us a strong base from which to support clients locally and across wider Europe,” he said. “The Madrid office reflects our continued focus on building depth in key markets while drawing on the technical experience of our global team.”

He added: “What stood out to me about Black & White Engineering was its culture, growth and the clarity of the business strategy. The opportunity is to build on that by creating long-term value for clients, strengthening our European offer and making sure we have the right technical expertise close to the markets we serve.”

Alongside Uttley, Hernandez has joined the new office with more than 20 years of international experience in data centre and critical infrastructure engineering. This includes major schemes across Europe, the Middle East, Australia and the Americas, with his career background spanning hyperscale and colocation environments across advisory, design, construction, commissioning and operational delivery.

He said on his appointment: “The opportunity to build Black & White Engineering’s presence in Spain from the ground up was a major draw. The market here is developing quickly and clients need advisers who understand both the technical demands of these projects and the local delivery environment.”

Hernandez will work closely with Black & White Engineering’s wider European leadership team as the consultancy seeks to expand in Spain.

“My focus is on establishing Black & White Engineering as a recognised name in Spain,” he added. “That means building a strong local team, developing trusted client relationships and delivering work that shows the value of specialist data centre engineering expertise close to clients.”

The news of the new office comes as Black & White Engineering enjoys continued growth across its network and has. It employs more than 1,200 people and has expanded its teams in several areas, having also recently opened an Australia office in May to boost its APAC presence.
