Internet users have reported widescale outages across platforms using Cloudflare this morning, which includes Zoom, Canva, LinkedIn and Down Detector.
Cloudflare is a company that helps websites manage their internet traffic around the world. Many of these platforms have faced difficulties in connecting and staying connected.
The outage could have been caused by an update to its data centre in Detroit, US. Cloudflare reported on its Cloudflare Status website this morning: “Scheduled maintenance is currently in progress. We will provide updates as necessary.
“We will be performing scheduled maintenance in DTW (Detroit) data centre on 2025-12-05 between 09:00 and 13:00 UTC. Traffic might be re-routed from this location, hence there is a possibility of a slight increase in latency during this maintenance window for end-users in the affected region.”
Cloudflare has reportedly also enacted an update to its Chicago data centre this morning.
The news comes merely weeks after Cloudflare reported a significant outage in November that caused large parts of the internet to crash and struggle to load.
The issue was a configuration file that is automatically generated to manage threat traffic, which grew beyond its expected size and triggered a crash in the software system that handles traffic for a number of Cloudflare’s services.
Cloudflare quickly confirmed the issue and worked to recover the services, but said customers may continue to observe higher-than-normal error rates as it tried to fix the problem.
It also sparked up the ongoing resiliency debate over numerous services being managed by a singular company.
Speaking at the time, Dane Knecht, CTO at Cloudflare, shared: “Transparency about what happened matters … That issue, impact it caused and time to resolution is unacceptable. Work is already underway to make sure it does not happen again, but I know it caused real pain today.
“The trust our customers place in us is what we value the most and we are going to do what it takes to earn that back.”
Capacity has contacted Cloudflare representatives for comment.
