Digital Realty and IXPN have committed to expanding the peering ecosystem in Nigeria with a new internet exchange point (IXP).
Located at Digital Realty’s newly commissioned Ibeju-Lekki data centre, a key landing site for the 2Africa subsea cable, the move is designed to strengthen resilience, reduce latency and keep more internet traffic local. Both companies said they hope to position Lagos as a leading interconnection hub for West Africa, in addition to supporting Nigeria’s growing role in the global digital economy.
“This activation at our Lekki campus represents a deepening of Digital Realty commitment to connecting the local and regional digital economy to global networks,” said Ike Nnamani, managing director of Digital Realty in Nigeria. “By integrating IXPN’s exchange point, we are delivering resilient peering that enables lower latency and can increase operational efficiency for our customers.”
The newly activated point of presence (PoP) at the Lekki data centre builds on IXPN’s existing PoP at Digital Realty’s campus located in Victoria Island. It also hopes to extend IXPN’s reach and offer access from 12 data centres across Nigeria, making IXPN uniquely available in all major data centres in Lagos.
Eager to position Lagos as a hub for local and regional interconnectivity, Digital Realty’s Lekki data centre serves as a landing point for 2Africa, to deliver reliable and high-speed connectivity. The leading data centre company said it is committed to enhancing Nigeria’s role in the global digital economy, with its Lekki and Victoria Island campuses making it the first carrier-neutral data centre provider in Lagos to operate two campuses.
Improved access to IXPN at the Lekki campus, networks and service providers should be able to benefit from expanded and resilient public peering options. Likewise, it can help to offer enhanced resilience and disaster recovery options for the industry – with enhancements working to reduce latency, improve efficiency, support robust data exchange for content providers and cloud platforms and enable enterprises to meet growing demands both locally and internationally.
“Expanding IXPN to Digital Realty’s Lekki campus is a significant step in our journey to enhance connectivity across Nigeria,” said Muhammed Rudman, CEO at IXPN. “Our members are expected to benefit from faster, low-latency pathways, allowing broader digital inclusion and fueling Nigeria’s digital economy.”
