Egypt has signed a $3.5 billion deal to give 410 megahertz of new spectrum to its four mobile operators, calling it the largest spectrum deal in the country’s telecom history.

Under the agreement, state-owned Telecom Egypt, along with Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt and e& Egypt will collectively pay the government $3.5 billion.

According to the cabinet, the amount of newly assigned spectrum is equal to the total frequency distributed to mobile operators since mobile services were launched in Egypt 30 years ago.

Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat said the deal would double mobile spectrum capacity and help prepare networks for future digital services.

Additionally, he described it as a long-term plan to upgrade Egypt’s telecom infrastructure through cooperation between the government and private companies.

The agreement was signed at the Mohamed Ali Palace in Cairo’s Shubra district under the supervision of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, with an appearance from Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli, who attended the signing of the largest spectrum deal in Egypt’s telecom history.
