As a result, the new AI hub located in Visakhapatnam (Vizag) will merge advanced data centres, renewable energy sources and a strong fibre-optic network to support India’s growing demand for digital and AI services.
The new AI hub will include a large data centre campus with gigawatt-scale computing capacity, developed in partnership with AdaniConneX and Airtel. It will use the same infrastructure that powers Google products like Search, Workspace and YouTube.
Once completed, the Visakhapatnam hub will join Google’s global network of AI data centres in 12 countries and draw on innovations from its R&D centres in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune.
Meanwhile, Google will also build a new subsea cable gateway in Visakhapatnam, connecting India to its global network of more than two million miles of undersea and land cables, improving digital connectivity and providing faster internet access.
In addition, the technology giant will plan to partner with local organisations to expand renewable energy generation, build new transmission lines and improve energy storage in Andhra Pradesh.
Additionally, the investment will also support the Indian government’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision to make India a global technology leader.
According to a study by Access Partnership, commissioned by the technology giant, the project is expected to generate at least $15 billion in US GDP over the next five years amid new economic activity and collaboration between Indian and American teams.
Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble IT Minister, Government of India, said: “I would like to thank Google for making this announcement of $15 billion dollars. This digital infrastructure will go a long way in meeting the goals of our India AI mission. I would also like to thank the Honorable Prime Minister for giving us this vision of using technology in every walk of life.
“I would like the industry to help re-skill and upskill our IT professionals in a major way, and thank Google for making this a major part of their agenda. AI services are emerging as a totally new category in our digital economy, and we look forward to this new facility being used for developing our youth for AI services.”
Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, added: “This significant investment in Andhra Pradesh marks a new chapter in India’s digital transformation journey. We are proud to host India’s first truly gigawatt-scale data centre and Google’s first AI hub in India, which is a testament to our shared commitment to innovation, AI adoption, and long-term support for businesses and start-ups in the state.”
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian concluded: “The Google AI hub in Visakhapatnam represents a landmark investment in India’s digital future. By delivering industry-leading AI infrastructure at scale, we are enabling businesses to innovate faster and creating meaningful opportunities for inclusive growth.
“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to the Indian and US governments to harness AI responsibly and drive transformative impact for society.”
