The cable is named after the Thai word for sea, “talay,” and will extend the interlink cable announced last year as part of the Australia Connect initiative.

TalayLink will establish a diverse route to Thailand via the Indian Ocean, west of the Sunda Strait, where many existing subsea cables currently run. This strategic routing will integrate future Google data centres and cloud regions in Thailand into a robust global network.

Alongside the subsea cable, new connectivity hubs are planned in Mandurah, Western Australia, and Southern Thailand.

These hubs will support advanced digital services, including cable switching, content caching, and colocation, while future-proofing regional connectivity. The Mandurah hub provides a new landing point away from the heavily trafficked Perth area, while the Southern Thailand hub leverages local infrastructure in partnership with colocation provider AIS.

“The TalayLink cable will serve as a pivotal piece of digital infrastructure, enhancing Thailand’s connectivity and resilience,” said Narit Therdsteerasukdi, secretary general, Thailand Board of Investment (BOI).

“Together with Google’s upcoming Google Cloud region and data centre in Thailand, these forward‑looking investments will significantly expand regional network and computing capacity, while firmly positioning Thailand as a critical digital gateway for next‑generation cloud and AI innovation in Southeast Asia.”

Pratthana Leelapanang, CEO of AIS, added: “The combination of Google’s new, diverse submarine cable path and AIS’s high-reliability colocation capabilities will ensure the digital infrastructure in the region is capable of supporting the country’s AI strategy.”

Preeyaporn Tangpaosak, president of ALT Telecom, highlighted IGC’s role: “This cable is an important new piece of digital infrastructure that will accelerate Thailand’s ambitious digital economy development strategy.”

Once completed, TalayLink and the connectivity hubs will strengthen network resilience across Australia, Southeast Asia, and Africa, supporting economic transformation, AI adoption, and digital inclusion across the region.
