Global telecoms carrier iBASIS is set to complete its acquisition of wholesale assets from Telstra International, in one of the more significant independent consolidations the international voice and messaging market has seen in recent years.
The transaction covers Telstra International’s global voice, IPX and messaging wholesale customer contracts, and follows the receipt of all necessary regulatory approvals.
The acquisition strengthens iBASIS’ footprint in Asia-Pacific – a region where traffic growth, mobile penetration and enterprise digitisation continue to outpace many mature markets. It also deepens the Paris-headquartered company’s position as an independent wholesale specialist in a sector increasingly defined by automation, fraud mitigation and the ongoing migration to IP-based interconnection.
Scale in a market that never stood still
Wholesale voice and messaging rarely attract the same headlines as hyperscale data centres or cloud-native platforms, but they remain foundational to how the world communicates. International interconnect, roaming enablement and A2P messaging sit beneath both consumer mobility and enterprise communications – the complexity of managing them has grown rather than diminished as network architectures have evolved.
iBASIS has long positioned itself as a specialist capable of navigating that complexity: regulatory fragmentation, bilateral agreements, IPX signalling and the technical demands of next-generation interconnection.
Patrick George, CEO of iBASIS, described the deal as a milestone in the company’s growth trajectory, highlighting the addition of Telstra’s wholesale team and its Asia-Pacific knowledge base as central to the transaction’s value. “We are very pleased to welcome Telstra International’s wholesale business and team into the iBASIS family,” George commented.
“Their deep expertise and regional knowledge will be a valuable asset in serving our customers and partners worldwide. Together, we are shaping the future of wholesale communications by combining global reach, cutting-edge technology, and a customer-first approach. Starting this Friday, we will start phase one of migration activities, focusing on delivering high-end quality and reliability.”
Phase one of the migration process is due to begin immediately upon completion, with service quality and reliability the stated priorities throughout.
For Telstra International, the divestment allows a sharper focus on its core retail and mobility priorities, whilst preserving continuity for existing wholesale customers through agreed transition arrangements.
Roary Stasko, CEO, said the agreement ensures ongoing quality for international voice and retail customers and establishes a partnership framework with iBASIS for future service development.
“The completion of this transaction will ensure continuity and quality for our international wholesale voice and Retail customers, while maintaining quality outcomes across the Retail and mobility services. We look forward to our partnership with iBASIS in the coming years to drive quality, performance and new services,” said Stasko.
Stasko spoke exclusively to Capacity about building an autonomous network and his vision for 2023.
Asia-Pacific: the strategic prize
Asia-Pacific remains one of the most dynamic regions for telecoms traffic growth. Rapid 5G rollout, expanding cross-border data flows and sustained migration from legacy TDM to IP-based services are reshaping interconnect patterns across the region, creating both opportunity and operational complexity for carriers active there.
By acquiring Telstra International’s wholesale contracts, iBASIS gains enhanced reach across key corridors linking Australia, Southeast Asia and major North Asian markets.
The IPX component of the deal deserves particular attention. As signalling and data roaming shift further into IP-based environments, the demand for secure, high-performance IPX interconnect is only growing.
Messaging adds another layer. A2P continues to be both commercially attractive and operationally demanding – fraud, grey routes and tightening regulatory scrutiny require constant vigilance. The addition of Telstra’s wholesale messaging relationships gives iBASIS greater scale in negotiating bilateral agreements and enforcing quality controls, though it also increases the operational surface area that needs to be managed.
