iBASIS expands APAC reach with new Tokyo IPX PoP

iBASIS has strengthened its footprint in Asia Pacific with the launch of a new IPX Point of Presence in Tokyo.

The site becomes the company’s fourteenth PoP worldwide and its third in APAC as it accelerates regional expansion to meet rising roaming and cross border data demand.

The deployment forms part of a wider investment programme to increase the reach and resilience of the company’s global IPX footprint.

Tokyo is the first step in a new phase of build out across Asia, supported by the recent acquisition of Telstra International’s wholesale voice, IPX and messaging assets, which is still subject to regulatory approvals.

iBASIS says the new site will improve performance for next generation services and create additional inter Asia routing options for operators.

“Establishing a presence in Tokyo brings us closer to key markets and expands inter Asia paths, ensuring reliable performance for roaming and next-generation services,” said Ajay Joseph, CTO at iBASIS.

“This step aligns with our broader deployment roadmap and will complement our recent expansion in the region with the acquisition of Telstra International’s wholesale voice, IPX, and messaging assets.”

The company says operators are demanding more direct routes and lower latency as roaming traffic volumes grow and as 5G and IoT services scale.

The PoP will enable a broader range of services including real time applications that require improved stability across borders. It will support all IPX services as well as VoLTE conversion and Roaming Hub Breakout services.

“Japan’s strategic role in global internet infrastructure is underscored by its position as a critical junction for advanced telecom services,” said Nitin Bhas, chief of strategy and insights at kaleido Intelligence.

The Tokyo PoP will enter service in December 2025 and will support customers in Japan and across East Asia. iBASIS, recently named a Leading Tier One IPX Network by ROCCO, will highlight its newest deployments at GSMA WAS in Rome.
