iXAfrica to host Oracle’s first public cloud region in Kenya

iXAfrica Data Centre Limited has been selected by Oracle as the host partner for the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) region in Nairobi, marking the launch of Kenya’s first public cloud region.

The collaboration, announced by Kenyan President William Ruto in January 2024, comes as demand for cloud services continues to grow across East Africa. The Nairobi region will allow organisations to access OCI services locally, reducing latency and supporting data sovereignty requirements.

Oracle’s decision reflects iXAfrica’s position as East and Central Africa’s largest hyperscale, carrier-neutral and AI-ready data centre facility.

The site has been purpose-built to global cloud standards and offers high-density capacity, resilient power architecture and close proximity to key submarine and national connectivity routes. According to iXAfrica, this makes it the only facility in the Kenyan market currently able to support immediate public cloud deployments at scale.

“We are delighted to be in execution mode to bring OCI to Kenya,” said Snehar Shah, CEO of iXAfrica.

“With this collaboration, iXAfrica is leveraging the renewable energy, talent, and abundant submarine and national connectivity available in our market.”

By hosting OCI locally, iXAfrica says enterprises and public sector organisations will be able to deploy latency-sensitive applications, accelerate digital transformation initiatives and develop AI-driven services closer to end users. The move is also expected to strengthen the resilience of Kenya’s digital infrastructure and support the growth of a more competitive regional digital economy.

“Around the world, governments and enterprises rely on OCI for its security, scalability, and ability to run mission-critical workloads that enable innovation at scale,” said David Bunei, Oracle’s country leader for Kenya. “These unique capabilities and our collaboration with iXAfrica will further support the growth of the country’s digital economy.”

iXAfrica said construction, power and connectivity infrastructure at its Nairobi campus are already at an advanced stage, placing the company in “full execution mode” for hyperscale cloud platforms.
