The deployment will take place within UT Austin’s Wireless Networking and Communications Group (WNCG), one of the world’s leading research centres in next-generation wireless technologies.
Digital twins are increasingly recognised as a key enabler for 6G development, allowing the creation of high-fidelity, real-time virtual representations of physical networks. These models enable researchers to design, test, and optimise complex communication systems safely and efficiently before live deployment.
At 6G@UT, researchers will explore advanced digital twin applications, including enhanced beamforming and adaptive connectivity for next-generation communication networks. A major focus will be the development of a “multiverse of digital twins” — multiple interconnected models operating across varying levels of fidelity and computing environments, from the cloud to the edge. This approach aims to bring unprecedented flexibility to the design, analysis, and optimisation of future networks.
Keysight’s technology will enable 6G@UT to integrate diverse data sources, including ray-tracing models, telco configurations, open-source datasets, lab measurements, and live telemetry, while ensuring digital twins are calibrated and validated with real-time data. This will allow simulation of both terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks, supporting use cases from smart cities to satellite systems.
Professor Kaushik Choudhury, professor in electrical and computer engineering at UT Austin, said: “Keysight solutions will be used to create network models by importing a diverse set of data sources… The calibrated digital twins will provide deep insights for advancing research in next-gen technologies, shaping how future networks are designed and deployed.”
Professor Jeffrey Andrews, director of 6G@UT added: “We are excited to be among the first academic groups worldwide to use this state-of-the-art ray tracing and emulation tool… We believe this partnership with Keysight will allow us to train superior machine learning and generative AI models for a variety of 6G applications.”
Giampaolo Tardioli, vice president of 6G and next-generation technology at Keysight said: “Powered by Keysight’s digital twin channel modelling and AI, the UT Austin lab will serve as a hub for innovation and collaboration in the 6G space.”
The partnership strengthens Keysight’s role in shaping 6G research and standards, extending a collaboration that began in 2022 as part of its Industrial Affiliate membership with 6G@UT.
