El Salvador has appointed Liberty Networks to design, build, deploy, and manage its inaugural subsea cable system. The project will see the deployment of an 1,800-kilometre subsea cable, which will connect El Salvador to major international hubs.

Until now, the Central American nation has relied exclusively on land-based links with neighbouring countries, leaving its digital ecosystem vulnerable to outages and limited in capacity.

“This is a historic project that will advance El Salvador’s digital future,” said Ray Collins, senior vice president of infrastructure and corporate strategy at Liberty Latin America. “We thank SIGET for their trust and look forward to deploying the country’s first submarine cable. This investment goes beyond building critical infrastructure; it lays the foundation for economic growth, innovation, and opportunity for all Salvadorans.”

Currently, El Salvador’s internet connectivity is dependent on land-based links with neighbouring countries, which can be disrupted by natural disasters, technical issues, or other unexpected incidents.

The planned cable system is expected to be operational by the second half of 2028. Liberty Networks has indicated that it will announce its technology partner for the project in the near future.

Analysts note that the move aligns with a wider regional trend, as many Latin American nations are investing in submarine cables to secure faster, more reliable international connections.
