The ACR2 data centre was launched by Digital Realty in October this year and is a state-of-the-art facility strategically located to several submarine landing cable stations in downtown Accra.

LINX’s engineering team has officially installed the LINX Accra interconnection hub within the new data centre, with networks co-located at Digital Realty now able to access low latency peering services via a single cross connect into LINX Accra.

“We are lucky to have such engaged data centre partners here in Ghana. When building IXPs in new geographies, collaboration is key,” said Nurani Nimpuno, head of global engagement for LINX. “Our data centre partners are a key part of our business case when building in new locations and success is very much a team effort.

The news comes shortly after LINX Accra went live, which is a new internet exchange point (IXP) for Ghana to provide future-ready, scalable solutions to expand the digital ecosystem in West Africa.

“The launch of LINX Accra is a major step forward in our commitment to supporting digital transformation across Africa,” Jennifer Holmes, CEO at LINX, said at the time. “By enabling local traffic exchange, and connecting Onix and PAIX via our fabric, we’re helping to build a stronger, more resilient and higher performing internet ecosystem in the region.”

LINX Accra, which was announced last year, will now provide a neutral future-proof platform and meeting place for Internet Service Providers (ISPs), content providers, cloud services and businesses alike to exchange data locally.

This is LINX’s third location in Africa, in addition to LINX Nairobi and LINX Mombasa, and therefore marks a strong connectivity milestone for the continent.

Nimpuno added: “When our team are on the ground installing, we work closely alongside our data centre partners to ensure the project is compliant with their security measures and is installed efficiently while knowledge sharing along the way.”
