Macquarie Data Centres to construct 200MW Sydney tech campus

Macquarie Data Centres is expected to develop an engineering and technology campus in Macquarie Park, Sydney’s North Zone, which will be co-located within a ~200MW data centre.

The company, which is part of Macquarie Technology Group, has purchased a 34,200 square metre development site, where it intends to construct an engineering and technology campus. Completion of the purchase is subject to obtaining planning and other approvals, which are expected in the coming weeks.

It’s intended that the proposed facility design incorporate advanced air cooling and closed-loop technology for primary heat rejection to minimise water consumption. The design also aims to support high-density direct-to-chip liquid and air cooling in data halls.

“The proposed campus will also deliver lasting benefits to the local community. In partnership with Macquarie University, students and researchers will gain hands-on access to the latest data centre, cyber security and cloud technologies,” said David Hirst, CEO at Macquarie Data Centres. “It will also provide a more than one-acre-sized intergenerational community park for City of Ryde residents.”

Macquarie Data Centres said the new campus will support research, technology and learning opportunities in connection with Macquarie University, building on that existing relationship. The university will provide practical opportunities for students and researchers to engage with the latest data centre, cybersecurity, AI and cloud technologies at the new campus.

The campus is in a high-tech industrial zone in one of Sydney’s most fibre-rich technology corridors in Macquarie Park. With the campus in its design stage, Macquarie Data Centres said there is a chance for existing and prospective customers to collaborate early on to potentially incorporate their design specifications.

As part of the development, Macquarie is planning to provide significant community benefits to the local area – including the creation of a park within the campus for local use. It will include a new outdoor art gallery to showcase talent in the area, which will build on the company’s ambition to support early childhood literacy and career planning for students.

Construction is expected to be completed in late 2029, subject to approvals.

Macquarie Data Centres is one of the most certified data centre operators in Australia and has worked within Macquarie Park for 16 years. Last year, it completed the structural phase of its newest AI and cloud data centre, IC3 Super West, which supported more than 2,400 construction, design and fit-out jobs and represented the only new AI capacity to be added in Sydney’s North Zone in 2026.
