The layoffs will impact the Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) team, as well as groups working on product-related AI and AI infrastructure, Axios first reported, citing a company memo.

The new TBD Lab, which includes “a few dozen” researchers and engineers developing the technology giant’s next-generation foundation models, will not be affected.

Chief AI officer Alexandr Wang said having fewer team members would streamline decisions and increase the “responsibility, scope and impact” of each role, however, affected employees are being encouraged to apply for other roles within the company.

The cuts come as Meta confirmed that it will be entering a joint venture with Blue Owl Capital to finance the development, construction and operations of the Hyperion data centre campus in Richland Parish, Louisiana.

Earlier this year, Capacity reported that the wave of job cuts in the tech and telecoms sector shows no signs of slowing, with new data revealing that 26,215 employees have already been laid off in 2025.

At the time Meta laid off 3,600 employees, according to a report by RationalFX.
