E& UAE has launched an autonomous drone-based cell tower inspection powered by artificial intelligence (AI), marking a major leap in the operator’s telecom infrastructure management and operational safety.
The initiative combines real-time data analytics, AI and autonomous flight capabilities to enhance speed, safety and sustainability of cell tower inspection across the UAE.
The introduction of autonomous drones will redefine how telecom infrastructure is maintained and monitored. Each drone is tracked in real time from a drone operation centre by expert teams who oversee flight progress and ensure inspection accuracy.
Unlike traditional tower inspections, drones can navigate complex environments autonomously, enhancing worker safety and operational efficiency. They also play a vital role in emergency response, supporting the delivery of critical aid and connectivity in hard-to-reach areas.
By utilizing AI, drones can detect structural anomalies during inspection, enabling a proactive approach to maintenance that prevents disruptions, identifies potential threats, and extends the assets lifecycle.
By feeding the data into e&’s digital infrastructure management system, the operator can create a platform for predictive maintenance and optimise asset use, as well as reduce costs associated with site visits.
Marwan Bin Shakar, Acting Chief Technology & Information Officer, e& UAE, commented that “the integration of autonomous drones into our operations reflects our commitment to reimagining network operations through cutting-edge innovation that improves reliability, safety and sustainability”.
“Through AI-powered insights and real-time control, we are enhancing the safety and accuracy of telecom tower inspections while enabling faster, data-driven decisions that future-proof our infrastructure”.
Drone utilization is another step towards a future-ready digital ecosystem
This innovation is another showcase of e& UAE’s role as a digital enabler, aligning with the UAE’s broader ambitions to lead in technology-driven transformation and smart city development.
It also showcases the importance of coordination between innovation and software platforms, technology adopters and government organisations to create and regulate supportive policies that enable innovation.
In October 2024, e& UAE announced a strategic partnership with the UAE’s Cyber Security Council (CSC) and General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), introducing a new product line UAE Drones.
The deployment of ultra-fast, low latency 5G connectivity has made it possible to unlock the country’s Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) landscape. UAE Drones will provide real-time threat detection, prevention, and response capabilities, significantly strengthening UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and CSC systems.
“With the support of the Drones Operations Centre, we’re demonstrating how technology can elevate operational resilience while supporting the UAE’s broader ambitions for smart, sustainable cities,” said Mr Bin Shakar.
AI is becoming the next step in tower digitization
Digitisation has become a central pillar to many towercos’ operational strategy. The importance of cost optimisation and sustainability is at the heart of a towercos’ ability to drive efficiencies across the site for stakeholders and customers.
Other key factors like energy management, data analytics for mobile operator reporting and accurate equipment billing are all driving adoption of AI as a tool for transparency, efficiency and asset management.
At TowerXchange Meetup MENA held in April, towerco executives across the region discussed how rising energy prices, increasing site maintenance costs, and growing pressure to improve service reliability have forced towercos to rethink their operational strategies.
Digital solutions, particularly AI and automation, provide the tools needed to enhance efficiency while reducing operational expenses.
The telecom infrastructure industry is moving towards a future where AI and automation will be at the core of operations. The transition may not be immediate, but the momentum is undeniable.
E&’s AI drone platform is the latest in an ongoing digital revolution that further embraces emerging technologies as an unlocker of efficiency, sustainability and speed of operations.
