nLighten, the edge data centre platform, has officially completed a major refurbishment of its Bristol data centre to support AI-ready infrastructure.

The upgrade forms part of nLighten’s £100 million (US$132.43 million) investment to expand and modernise its UK edge data centre network. It comes as demand for compute continues to outpace supply across major UK hubs, as more businesses require higher-density, AI-ready infrastructure.

Speaking exclusively with Capacity, nLighten CEO Dame Dawn Childs said: “This investment reflects a clear shift in where AI infrastructure demand is heading. Bristol is emerging as a critical hub for high‑density and AI‑ready capacity, and this expansion allows us to support customers who need scalable, secure infrastructure outside London.”

She added: “We’re strengthening the UK’s regional digital backbone while enabling the next phase of AI‑driven growth.”

The upgraded site is expected to improve access to low-latency, high-performance computing for data-intensive and mission-critical applications. This includes AI, cloud services and next-generation digital platforms.

Across its UK footprint, nLighten is working to support businesses and public sector organisations with resilient, sovereign and more sustainable infrastructure. Its goal is to help enable innovation, regional growth and to support the UK in its ambition to become a technology leader.

Core infrastructure at the facility has been enhanced specifically to support high-density AI workloads, including rack configurations. New data halls, upgraded cooling and power systems have been included, in addition to new energy efficiency improvements targeting a PUE of 1.2-1.3 and enhanced carrier-neutral connectivity.

nLighten said these upgrades have already nearly doubled the site’s AI-ready power capability. It means that higher-density AI workloads can be supported closer to where data is generated and used.

The upgrade comes during a time when AI adoption continues to accelerate across numerous sectors, but regional infrastructure is constraining growth. Locally, the refurbishment is not only expected to support organisations that require low latency to scale, but will also deliver a direct employment benefit.

Bristol already has an established technology ecosystem, which makes it a great location to address AI-related pressures, nLighten said. The site will also serve as a Sovereign Infrastructure Hub, so organisations with strict requirements around data residency, security and long-term resilience are supported.

“This investment reflects growing demand for AI and secure data infrastructure beyond London,” Dame Childs said. “Regional capacity like Bristol will play a critical role in supporting innovation while giving organisations greater control over where and how their data is processed.”
