Google Cloud and Nokia launch AI agents for telecoms

Nokia and Google Cloud have partnered to embed AI agents built with Gemini AI into Nokia’s autonomous network product suite.

Nokia is expected to develop and launch six AI agents as part of the collaboration to eliminate manual troubleshooting bottlenecks. As a result, telecom providers should be able to enjoy lower operational costs and rapidly resolve network issues for their customers.

Google said, in some cases, network problem-solving times could be cut by 50-80%.

“The AI era demands a new kind of network – one that is programmable, AI-native and able to operate at machine speed,” said Vivek Jaiswal, senior vice president of autonomous networks at Nokia. “With Gemini-powered agents integrated into Nokia’s automation portfolio, we’re helping telecom providers move beyond manual operations to maximise performance, ensure reliability and find new efficiencies within their data.”

Nokia’s six specialised agents are designed to manage specific operational tasks independently or work together to solve complex network problems. The capabilities were developed using Google Cloud’s Agent Development Kit (ADK) on the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, enabling Nokia to quickly develop smart conversational and routing paths that leverage Gemini’s multimodal reasoning.

Instead of requiring complex managed services, Google said the entire multi-agent framework runs seamlessly on standard Google Cloud compute and storage. The framework also introduces what Nokia calls “glass box autonomy,” meaning the action reasoner agent serves as an advisory layer. The companies said this presents confidence-based recommendations to human engineers, who retain final approval over critical control points before fixes are automatically executed and logged.

Moving from passive monitoring to proactive, agent-based architecture is designed to enable telecom providers to save on costs and improve reliability.

“Agentic AI marks a fundamental shift in how telecommunications networks are managed, moving operators away from rigid templates to dynamic, goal-oriented automation,” said Sridhar Gollapudi, global telco market lead at Google Cloud.

He added: “By applying Gemini’s multimodal reasoning capabilities to complex data streams, this partnership helps operators to transition from manual workflows to a self-driving posture that lowers costs and optimises resources globally.”

The news comes amid many companies within the wider technology industry experimenting with the use of AI agents. Google Cloud in particular has committed itself towards achieving the “agentic telco” – AI agents operating behind the scenes to provide greater efficiency across a business.

Speaking with Capacity at MWC Barcelona earlier this year, the global head of industry – telecom, Angelo Libertucci, explained how 2026 is the new era for AI integration in this way.

“Consumers want experiences that are human-like, instantaneous, frictionless and tailored,” he said. “With the work we’re doing to build what we call the proactive loyalty engine, they’re achieving strong results.”
