Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has warned China holds an infrastructure edge over the US in AI, particularly in construction and energy, despite the US maintaining a lead in AI chip technology.

Speaking with Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) president and CEO Dr. John Hamre, Huang said: “If you want to build a data centre here in the United States from breaking ground to standing up an AI supercomputer is probably about three years.

“They can build a hospital in a weekend,” he compared China to the US.

According to the CEO of Nvidia, China has “twice as much energy as we have as a nation, and our economy is larger than theirs. Makes no sense to me”, adding that China’s grow “straight up,” while US capacity remains relatively flat.

Despite these advantages, Huang added that the technology giant remains “generations ahead” of China in AI chip technology and semiconductor manufacturing.

However, he warned against underestimating China, stating “anybody who thinks China can’t manufacture is missing a big idea.”

This comes as earlier this year, Huang suggested China could win the AI race, a claim he later clarified, saying the country was “nanoseconds behind America” in a statement on Nvidia’s X account.
