With more than 40,000 supporters passing through the ground on matchdays, the operator said the upgrades are designed to deliver a more reliable experience during peak demand, making it easier for customers to share content, access digital tickets and use contactless payments.
Inside the stadium, O2 has optimised the rooftop mast at Stamford Bridge, increasing mobile capacity and improving performance across the stands, concourses and hospitality areas. The improvements are intended to ensure customers can continue to stream, message and stay connected even when the venue is at full capacity.
The work extends beyond the stadium footprint. O2 has installed new small cells and upgraded existing sites in the surrounding area to improve coverage and reliability for fans travelling to and from matches, as well as for local residents and businesses. The aim is to smooth connectivity before kick-off and after the final whistle, when large crowds place pressure on nearby networks.
Early results suggest the upgrades are already having an impact. On matchdays, O2 customers are using more than twice as much data as before, while experiencing a fourfold increase in mobile speeds.
Steven Verigotta, director of mobile delivery at Virgin Media O2, said: “Stamford Bridge is an iconic stadium with extremely high demand on matchdays. By optimising our network inside the ground and in the surrounding areas, we are giving O2 customers a more reliable mobile experience so they can enjoy every moment, from kick-off to the final whistle.”
The investment forms part of Virgin Media O2’s wider Mobile Transformation Plan, which focuses on expanding 4G and 5G coverage, deploying small cells in dense urban locations and addressing persistent network pressure points, including transport corridors, airports and large venues.
The operator has also been rolling out newly acquired spectrum following last year’s agreement with Vodafone UK to buy 78.8 MHz, lifting its total holdings to around 30% of UK mobile spectrum. O2 was recently named Europe’s most improved mobile network in Umlaut Connect’s Mobile Network Test, underscoring the momentum behind its network upgrades.
