FLAG, one of the world's largest privately owned subsea cable operators, has revealed a leadership change that will take effect on 1 October 2026.

Carl Grivner will step down as Chief Executive Officer and move into the role of Non-Executive Chairman. He will be succeeded by Paul Abfalter, currently FLAG’s Chief Strategy & Revenue Officer.

Grivner has led FLAG for the past six years, a period the company says has been marked by significant transformation and growth, strengthening its market position and laying the groundwork for its next phase of expansion.

Abfalter joined FLAG in 2024 and brings more than two decades of experience in global telecommunications. Since joining the company, he has helped shape its strategic direction and has been closely involved in driving commercial growth and supporting long-term expansion plans.

The leadership transition comes as FLAG pushes ahead with its Vision 2030 strategy, which centres on investment in critical fibre infrastructure to extend network reach, improve route diversity and resilience, and meet customers’ evolving connectivity needs.

FLAG said Abfalter’s appointment reflects the company’s continued focus on strengthening its global network and delivering long-term value for customers, partners and stakeholders, with his knowledge of the business and industry experience seen as key to leading the company through its next phase of growth.
