The deal, completed over a seven-day period, represents a 9,000-fold increase on a proof of concept Pure DC announced in March 2026 and is intended to demonstrate that gas-connected data centres can be decarbonised at operational scale using existing cross-border infrastructure and certification frameworks.
The biomethane was produced in 2025 at certified facilities in Germany using waste and residue feedstocks. It is unsubsidised, certified under the ISCC scheme, and compliant with Renewable Energy Directive II and III standards, carrying a carbon intensity of less than 12 gCOâ‚‚/MJ. That figure falls within the thresholds required for zero-rated treatment under the EU Emissions Trading System, subject to EPA monitoring plan approval. The gas was mass balanced from the German grid to the Irish network via established interconnectors, with the renewable attribute tracked through the GNI Renewable Gas Registry. Associated certificates are scheduled for cancellation in 2026 to prevent double counting.
Pure DC’s Dublin site is the beneficiary of the transaction, which the company positions as a transitional measure within a broader net-zero strategy targeting 2040. The company said it is continuing to progress Irish biomethane purchases alongside EU and UK imports while advancing longer-term measures including local renewable energy integration and energy storage.
Maria Jose Rivas Duarte, director of sustainability at Pure DC, said the transaction demonstrated that cross-border biomethane could be procured, mass balanced and registered at volume through existing infrastructure, adding that the company was helping to open a credible decarbonisation route for the broader data centre sector and other gas-dependent industries.
Agnes Warner, property director at Pure DC, described the procurement strategy as designed to build a balanced portfolio combining Irish, EU and UK-sourced biomethane across different geographies, feedstock types and contract structures. She said the approach provided hyperscaler and enterprise customers with an auditable pathway to lower embedded emissions.
Ireland’s National Biomethane Strategy targets up to 5.7TWh of domestic biomethane production annually by 2030. With domestic supply still in development, Pure DC said cross-border imports facilitated by the GNI registry were bridging the gap and supporting local investment in the sector.
