The route is situated at one of the Baltic region’s most geographically concentrated infrastructure corridors.

It links Kaunas, a primary aggregation hub for Baltic traffic, with Białystok, an eastern Polish node that connects onward to Warsaw and Western European backbone routes. Passing through Suwałki, it crosses one of the principal terrestrial gateways between Lithuania and Poland and sits within the Via Baltica infrastructure corridor, where transport and utility networks converge into a limited number of cross-border routes.

That concentration makes the corridor both strategically important and a natural point of vulnerability. The new path provides an independently routed alternative for traffic traversing the Baltic–Central Europe axis, increasing route diversity without relying on existing physical infrastructure.

Demand across the corridor is being driven by cloud interconnection growth, hyperscale expansion and rising east–west data flows between regional hubs and Western European backbone networks, trends that are pushing operators to add physically separate routing options alongside capacity upgrades.

The Kaunas–Białystok route forms part of RETN’s wider Nordic–Baltic infrastructure strategy, which spans Sweden, Finland, the Baltic states and Poland. The company said the addition increases the number of physically independent routing options across key segments of the corridor, improving resilience and flexibility for traffic moving between the Nordics and Central and Western Europe.

Tony O’Sullivan, CEO of RETN, said the route adds “a totally unique physically independent path between Lithuania and Poland across a key cross-border corridor,” describing it as part of a “sustained approach to building multiple independent routing options across the Nordic–Baltic region, particularly in areas where geography naturally concentrates infrastructure.”
