As a result, the move aims to fast-track innovation in next-generation communication networks.
Under the agreement, the two companies will focus on four main research areas including ‘6G, AI for RAN, AI and RAN and Large Telecom Model’, to improve network performance and efficiency via AI.
The company revealed that for ‘6G’, it will test the 7 GHz band, a potential frequency for the next generation of mobile networks, with plans for Samsung’s base station technology with SoftBank’s network expertise to explore new use cases.
In ‘AI for RAN’, the companies will study how AI can boost the performance of Radio Access Networks, focusing on the physical layer (Layer 1), whereas for ‘AI and RAN’ they will look at how AI and RAN can share the same infrastructure.
Additionally, its ‘Large Telecom Model’ project will use SoftBank’s AI foundation model, designed for the telecom industry, to make network optimisation faster and more secure with Large Language Model (LLM)-based AI.
SoftBank EVP and CTO, Hideyuki Tsukuda, said: “We are very pleased to collaborate with Samsung, a global leader in communication technologies. By combining the advanced expertise of both companies, we will accelerate the realisation of next-generation networks that evolve to become more efficient and highly reliable through AI-RAN.
“SoftBank remains committed to taking on the challenge of building the next-generation social infrastructure essential for a future society where AI and humans coexist.”
Samsung Electronics VP and head of advanced communications research centre, JinGuk Jeong, continued: “Through this collaboration with SoftBank, we aim to define meaningful use cases for both operators and end users, while securing key technologies for future commercialisation.
“Building on our advanced expertise in AI-RAN and 6G, Samsung will continue to lead innovation in next-generation communications.”
