The move reinforces the country’s position as a strategic transit hub on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.
Sparkle has signed a memorandum of understanding with NaiTel, the telecoms arm of Aqaba Digital Hub, and iLevant Ltd to extend the GreenMed submarine cable system through Jordan, creating a new digital connectivity corridor linking Europe and Asia.
Under the agreement, the three parties will work to integrate GreenMed with terrestrial fibre networks and regional interconnection platforms in Jordan, with the goal of strengthening connectivity resilience across the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East and diversifying the routes available to traffic moving between the two continents.
Jordan already serves as a landing point for the BlueMed and Blue & Raman submarine cable systems through Aqaba Digital Hub, establishing it as a node of growing strategic importance on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor — the infrastructure initiative backed by the G20 as an alternative to Chinese Belt and Road routing.
Eyad Abu Khorma, Founder and CEO of Aqaba Digital Hub, said the extension of GreenMed towards Jordan represented “a natural next step in strengthening diversified and resilient digital infrastructure across the region,” adding that Jordan was “uniquely positioned at the intersection of major global connectivity routes linking Europe and Asia.”
Enrico Bagnasco, CEO of Sparkle, described the agreement as “a further milestone in the development of GreenMed,” saying the expansion across Jordan would “enable the connection of strategic digital ecosystems and foster new development opportunities across the Mediterranean region and beyond.”
GreenMed has received funding from the European Commission under the Connecting Europe Facility programme. Sparkle is Italy’s largest international service provider and ranks among the leading global wholesale operators by network reach.
