It has been reported by some news outlets that Tesla has quietly filed a trademark application for ‘Megapod’ – modular data centre hardware systems for AI computing.

If genuine, the move could signal a significant AI data centre play from the EV company, suggesting that it is developing self-contained, scalable AI server modules that can be deployed across multiple locations.

According to sources online, Tesla has filed an intent-to-use application, which means it’s claiming the name for a product it hasn’t yet launched. Alleged screenshots of the filing suggest the Megapod system will cover “modular data centre hardware systems for artificial intelligence computing, comprised of computer servers, computer hardware for artificial intelligence data processing, networking equipment, power distribution units and cooling systems.”

A product like this could suggest that Tesla seeks to compete with other hardware giants like Nvidia, which currently dominate the AI chip market worldwide. While it hasn’t yet explored this area of the industry, Tesla has a successful energy storage business, with its Megapack battery solution having been sold to AI data centres, with company CEO Elon Musk previously saying its 2026 forecast was very strong.

Tesla’s track record with AI hardware hasn’t been too positive in the past, with the company ‘killing off’ its Dojo supercomputer last year, after Musk referred to it as “an evolutionary dead end”. Although the CEO did say the project would be restarted in January of this year with a new chip iteration.

However, Musk has been making significant moves across the technology industry recently, having just become the world’s first trillionaire. Another one of his companies, SpaceX, recently filed a record-breaking IPO, raising US$75 billion and valuing the company at roughly $1.77 trillion.

This came shortly after SpaceX acquired Musk’s own social media and AI company, xAI, further suggesting how Musk is betting big on the continued AI infrastructure boom.

Tesla hasn’t yet commented on the alleged ‘Megapod’ application.
