Telecom Italia (TIM), Fastweb + Vodafone have signed a non-binding agreement to build and run new mobile towers in Italy, with plans for up to 6,000 sites.

As a result, the joint venture will help speed up the national rollout of 5G and help the companies to improve efficiency and bring costs closer to the European average.

The partnership will begin via a joint venture equally owned by TIM and Fastweb + Vodafone, however, further down the line, the companies may bring in third-party investors to strengthen the company’s finances.

Additionally, the towers will also be available to other telecom operators under an open access model.

Construction will follow a multi-year plan, with TIM and Fastweb + Vodafone acting as anchor tenants of the infrastructure, signing long-term agreements to use the towers at market rates, with additional services being considered.

Despite financial terms not being disclosed, the project is subject to the pending regulatory approval.
