Trump approves Nvidia’s H200 AI chip sales to China

President Trump has approved plans to allow Nvidia to sell its H200 artificial intelligence processors to Chinese customers, pending final conditions from the Department of Commerce.

The move follows Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang urging the White House to relax limits that had barred the company from selling its most advanced chips in China due to national security concerns.

Announcing the decision, President Trump wrote on Truth Social: “I have informed President Xi, of China, that the United States will allow Nvidia to ship its H200 products to approved customers in China, and other Countries, under conditions that allow for continued strong National Security. President Xi responded positively.”

He added that the commerce officials were finalising the details and said he intends to extend similar permissions to other semiconductor companies, including AMD and Intel.

Nvidia’s H200 is the firm’s second-most capable chip and far more powerful than the H20 model initially customised for the Chinese market before it too was barred by US regulators in April.

Trump also said the US government would take a 25% share of the proceeds from the newly permitted sales, more than the 15% previously negotiated with Nvidia.

This follows President Trump’s earlier claim that the US would receive a 10% stake in Intel, despite calling for the “immediate” resignation of the US chipmaker CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, accusing him of having questionable links to China.

Trump claimed on social media that Tan was “highly conflicted”, a statement seemingly linked to Tan’s reported investments in firms the US government associates with the Chinese military.

However, Tan was not the only tech leader Trump has had a history of clashing with, but this year, he reversed course with several of them including Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Tesla’s Elon Musk.
