Verizon has completed its acquisition of Frontier Communications. The deal, which was first announced 16 months ago, sees Verizon integrate Frontier’s fibre network into its own Fios infrastructure. The combined entity now holds a substantial footprint of approximately 30 million fibre passings across the United States. Frontier, which has experienced rapid growth in recent years, brings an additional 8.8 million fibre passings to Verizon’s network. With ongoing Fios expansions, Verizon aims to reach more than 30 million households, with future ambitions to extend this to between 35 and 40 million locations nationwide.

Regulatory hurdles

The merger has not been without its challenges. Regulatory bodies and shareholders subjected the deal to considerable scrutiny. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) gave its nod only recently, and with a series of conditions attached, reflecting wider concerns about consolidation within the US telecom sector.

Integration strategy

From Verizon’s perspective, the acquisition is designed to support its push into bundled broadband and mobile offerings. By bringing together wireless and fibre capabilities, the company aims to roll out attractive packages to enhance customer retention and drive service adoption. The integration of Frontier’s network is also expected to enable faster broadband services, support the deployment of smart home technologies, and complement Verizon’s 5G fixed wireless ambitions.

With this acquisition, Verizon accelerates its stated timeline for fibre expansion, having previously targeted more than 30 million fibre passings by 2028.

Dan Schulman, CEO of Verizon said of the acquisition “Today marks a defining moment for our company and a new beginning for all of us. We are officially welcoming Frontier to Verizon, and together, we embark on a bold step toward market leadership and building the most trusted brand.

“I know for many of you, especially our new colleagues from Frontier, today’s news brings excitement and questions. We are committed to making this transition clear, supportive and focused on our people. Frontier has executed an impressive turnaround, consistently delivering strong results, and the momentum is clear.

“Our combined strength immediately creates an unparalleled fibre network. By seamlessly integrating Frontier’s lightning fast network with the award-winning Fios we instantly expand our reach to approximately 30 million fibre passings. This scale accelerates our ability to serve and delight millions more customers with better value, more choices and a massive platform for innovation and growth.

“This is a unique moment for all of us. We have a rare opportunity to create new value through this combination of extraordinary capabilities and talent. This journey requires dedication, focus and collaboration from every member of our team.”
