A single stadium final is a known, contained network problem. A month-long tournament spread across the United States, Canada and Mexico simultaneously is something different: a live, high-stakes test of whether 5G private networks, distributed fibre infrastructure, network slicing and centralised broadcast architecture can work at continental scale, under real-world conditions, all at once.
The data demand figures alone give a sense of the engineering challenge. Each match is projected to see fans inside a single stadium consume more than 50 terabytes of data, roughly the equivalent of streaming high-definition video continuously for more than three years.
Multiply that across 16 venues, add the fan festival sites, transport hubs, accreditation centres, hotels and surrounding city areas that operators are also planning for, and the aggregate traffic picture across the tournament’s five-week run is unlike anything previous editions of the competition have required.
Verizon, the official telecommunications services sponsor for the tournament, has spent more than two years preparing for it. The operator has delivered a three to five times increase in bandwidth across all 11 US host stadiums, adding spectrum and installing thousands of antennas under seats and in higher sections to handle concentrated crowd loads.
Private 5G networks are deployed across host venues, carrying applications that would not have existed at a sporting event five years ago, including Lenovo Referee View body cameras providing ultra-low latency on-field footage to broadcasters.
The broadcast infrastructure is where the scale of the network engineering becomes most visible. The contribution network runs at 600 gigabits of capacity per venue, structured as two 100-gigabit paths each with three redundant routes.
Verizon is carrying 7 terabits per second of data back to a centralised International Broadcast Centre in Dallas, using 64x100G wave circuits to connect every stadium to the IBC, delivering coverage to an expected 6 billion viewers worldwide via a fully diverse and highly reliable network. The IBC itself, housed in a 45,000 sq m facility at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, is processing and distributing feeds from all 16 venues to 180 broadcast rights holders worldwide.
AT&T and Rogers are also upgrading stadiums, transport hubs, fan zones and surrounding city areas for tournament traffic. The shift that operators have had to plan for is significant: previous events of this kind required high-density coverage inside a single venue. The 2026 tournament requires that plus coordinated capacity across entire host cities, with demand materialising unpredictably as fans move between venues, fan zones, airports and city centres.
Network slicing is getting a genuine workout. Priority applications, broadcast feeds, public safety coordination, operational data are running in dedicated performance envelopes within the shared network. That separation matters for a tournament of this complexity: a public safety slice that degrades under fan traffic is not an acceptable outcome, and the World Cup is effectively the largest live test of whether slicing delivers on its commercial promise in a real-world, high-density environment.
The lessons from what works, and what does not, will carry well beyond July. Major sporting events have historically acted as forcing functions for network investment that then benefits host city infrastructure for years afterwards. Verizon has confirmed that network upgrades and 5G ultra wideband deployments will remain in host cities, supporting enterprises, residents and public safety beyond the event.
That is not an unusual commitment, but the scale of what has been deployed across 16 cities in three countries means the permanent infrastructure legacy of this tournament is likely to be more significant than any previous edition.
