Zayo Europe has joined forces with leading Spanish dark fibre operator Reintel to launch a 400G-enabled wavelength network across Spain and Portugal.
The partnership will bring high-capacity connectivity to Iberia for the first time and see Zayo Europe’s Tier-1 IP services extending into new Spanish cities and into Portugal.
By tapping into Reintel’s established fibre network, carriers, cloud providers and enterprises throughout Iberia now have access to Zayo Europe’s robust pan-European network, which links over 600 data centres.
Spanning over 3,500km of fibre, the new network directly links key commercial and digital hubs such as Madrid, Lisbon, Barcelona, Bilbao and Sines.
Spain and Portugal have seen a surge in data centre investment in recent years, driven by the availability of renewable energy, improving subsea connectivity and growing demand from hyperscalers and enterprises looking to diversify away from more saturated Northern European markets.
Colman Deegan, CEO of Zayo Europe, said the partnership represents “another important step” in connecting Europe’s most dynamic markets.
“Spain and Portugal are quickly emerging as major data centre hubs, with a strong supply of renewable energy driving new investments to power AI and other cutting-edge technologies,” Deegan said. “By extending our network through Reintel’s low-latency, high-availability fibre routes, we’re enabling enterprises, data centres and carriers across Iberia to access our extensive high-performance connectivity that underpins Europe’s innovation economy.”
The company recently strengthened its presence in Germany, and Deegan described Iberia as the “next strategic link” in extending the reach of Zayo Europe’s continental network.
“With the significant data centre rollout planned in 2026, Zayo Europe is poised to set connectivity trends for the decade ahead,” he added.
Reintel brings critical local infrastructure
Founded as a specialist dark fibre operator, Reintel owns and operates one of the largest and most critical fibre infrastructures in Spain. By partnering with Reintel, Zayo Europe avoids the need for a lengthy greenfield build while gaining immediate access to diverse, high-quality fibre across the peninsula.
Francisco J. Blanca Patón, CEO of Reintel, said “Combining our extensive dark fibre footprint with Zayo Europe’s international network and unparalleled service excellence creates powerful opportunities for customers across the region,” Blanca Patón said. “This partnership will empower data centres and businesses across Spain and Portugal to keep pace with rising data demands and ultimately strengthen Europe’s digital backbone.”
